1954 Rumi Gobbetto SS52 Series 2The Gobbetto or ‘hunchback’ is the first motorbike developed by engineer Luigi Salmaggi for Rumi, until then a Bergamo-based steel company that entered the popular Italian motorbike market in 1950 with this extraordinary twin-cylinder 125cc two-stroke.The Gobbetto road version immediately stood out for its futuristic shape and distinct engineering. Gobbettos were soon used for track races and the first heavy regularity races like the Giro d'Italia, on which a competition version called the SS52 was also built from Rumi.Derived from the production version, the two-stroke engine is fed by a Dell'Orto SSI22C or SSI23C carburettor. The Gobbetto gets its name from Marelli's ‘hunchback’ external voltage regulator, model ST261DAS-D that is driven on the left side of the block provided a chain and crown wheel. The SS52 also gets a reinforced frame, topped by the unusual aluminium tank that artfully flows into the number plate. Rumi produced about 30 examples of the first series between ‘52 and ’54.The Gobbetto won the Italian 125cc championship at the Monza circuit in 1954, startling the public with the deafeningly sharp sound produced by the Rumi's.The second series Gobbetto gets a new frame, similar to its predecessor but equipped with a different swingarm. The imposing 22-litre tank gets rounder lines, retaining the special structure that continues beyond the fork, enriched with a new grey/yellow colour scheme, matching the Rum-grey frame. The horizontal two-cylinder two-stroke engine gets aluminium cylinders and reaches a maximum speed of 8,200 rpm and maximum power of 9 hp, giving the Gobbetto a top speed of 135 km/h, depending on the version and the type of fuel used. It is the spectacular, open megaphone exhaust that provides the unusually loud and sharp sound.Only ten Gobbettos from the second series would be assembled, of which only a handful remain.So this Rumi Gobbetto SS52 is a unique addition to any motorbike collection and the most collectible of all Rumi's produced, potentially bringing the crowd to their benches during classic races.Get in touch for more information and a test drive. De Gobbetto of ‘gebochelde’ is de eerste motorfiets die werd ontwikkeld door ingenieur Luigi Salmaggi voor Rumi, tot dan een staalbedrijf uit Bergamo dat in 1950 de populaire Italiaanse motorfietsmarkt betrad met deze buitengewone tweecilinder 125cc tweetakt.
De Gobbetto wegversie valt meteen op door z’n futuristische vorm en aparte techniek. Gobbetto’s worden al snel ingezet voor circuitwedstrijden en de eerste zware regelmatigheidsraces zoals de Giro d’Italia, waarop vanuit Rumi ook een competitieversie wordt gebouwd, de SS52 genaamd.
De tweetakt motor is afgeleid van de productieversie en wordt gevoed door een Dell'Orto SSI22C of SSI23C carburateur. De Gobbetto krijgt z’n naam door de ‘gebochelde’ externe spanningsregelaar van Marelli, model ST261DAS-D die aan de linkerkant van het blok wordt aangedreven mits een ketting en kroonwiel. De SS52 krijgt ook een versterkt frame, met daarop de bijzondere aluminium tank die kunstig overloopt in het nummerbord. Rumi produceert tussen '52 en '54 ongeveer dertig exemplaren van de eerste serie.
De Gobbetto won in 1954 het Italiaanse 125cc-kampioenschap op het circuit van Monza, waarbij het publiek werd opgeschrikt door het oorverdovende scherpe geluid die de Rumi’s produceerden.
De tweede serie Gobbetto krijgt een nieuw frame, vergelijkbaar met zijn voorganger maar uitgerust met een andere achterbrug. De imposante 22 liter tank krijgt rondere lijnen, met behoud van de bijzondere structuur die doorloopt tot voorbij de vork, verrijkt met een nieuw grijs/geel kleurenschema, passend bij het Rum- grijze frame. De horizontale tweecilinder tweetaktmotor krijgt aluminium cilinders en bereikt een maximum toerental van 8.200 tpm en een maximum vermogen van 9 pk, waarmee de Gobbetto een topsnelheid haalt van 135 km/u, afhankelijk van de versie en het type brandstof dat wordt gebruikt. Het is de spectaculaire, open megafoonuitlaat die zorgt voor het ongemeen luid en scherp geluid.
Er zouden slechts tien Gobbetto's uit de tweede serie geassembleerd, waarvan er slechts een handvol zijn overgebleven.
Deze Rumi Gobbetto SS52 is dus een unieke toevoeging aan elke motorfiets collectie en de meest verzamelbare van alle geproduceerde Rumi’s, die mogelijk het publiek tijdens classic races op de banken zal brengen.
