Dit is geen gewone auto. Dit is een statement. Een experiment. Een waanzinnig stukje techniek. Maak kennis met onze nieuwe Alfa Romeo SZ, oftewel Il Mostro—Zagato’s gedurfde visie op een Alfa Romeo uit de late jaren '80. Een tijdperk waarin Walkmans nog hip waren en neonkleuren de straten domineerden.

De SZ is allesbehalve traditioneel. Haar hoekige, bijna futuristische lijnen doen meer denken aan een conceptcar dan aan iets dat daadwerkelijk op de openbare weg zou mogen rijden. En toch, zoals alleen de Italianen dat durven, werd de auto geproduceerd. Het koetswerk bestaat uit thermoplastische composietpanelen—een vooruitstrevende technologie voor die tijd—gemonteerd op het spaceframe van Alfa’s eigen 75 Group A-racer. Onder de motorkap ligt de legendarische 3.0-liter Busso V6, goed voor 210 pk bij 6.200 rpm. Het geluid? Zo betoverend dat menig Italiaanse tenor er zijn snor voor zou afscheren. De 0-100 km/h sprint? Slechts 7 seconden. De gewichtsverdeling? Perfect in balans dankzij de vijfversnellingsbak met transaxle-opstelling, wat resulteert in een kart-ervaring in een Armani-maatpak.

De wielophanging komt rechtstreeks van de Alfa Romeo 75 IMSA, met dubbele wishbones rondom en Koni-schokdempers. Deze zorgen voor een instelbare rijhoogte, waarmee je met een elegant zwiepje de drempels in de wijk trotseert—om daarna de Koni’s weer te verlagen en plankgas die bocht in te vegen.

Dit exemplaar werd nieuw geleverd in Duitsland en vond in 2002 zijn weg naar Nederland. De afgelopen tien jaar werd hij met zorg gekoesterd door een Alfa Romeo-verzamelaar Pur Sang. Het onderhoud was in handen van Alfa-specialist Jean-Jacques van As—de man die de Busso V6 zo intiem kent dat hij hem met zijn ogen dicht kan reviseren.

The SZ is anything but traditional. Its angular, almost futuristic lines resemble a concept car more than something that should legally be allowed on public roads. And yet, in true Italian fashion, it was produced. The bodywork consists of thermoplastic composite panels—cutting-edge technology for its time—mounted on the spaceframe of Alfa’s own 75 Group A racer. Under the hood lies the legendary 3.0-liter Busso V6, delivering 210 hp at 6,200 rpm. The sound? So mesmerizing that even the finest Italian tenor might consider shaving his mustache in admiration. The 0-100 km/h sprint? Just 7 seconds. The weight distribution? Perfectly balanced thanks to the five-speed transaxle gearbox, resulting in a go-kart experience wrapped in an Armani suit.

The suspension comes directly from the Alfa Romeo 75 IMSA, featuring double wishbones all around and Koni dampers. These allow for adjustable ride height, so you can glide over speed bumps with grace—only to lower the Koni’s again and attack the next corner at full throttle.

This particular example was originally delivered in Germany and made its way to the Netherlands in 2002. For the past ten years, it has been carefully cherished by an Alfa Romeo collector Pur Sang. Maintenance was entrusted to Alfa specialist Jean-Jacques van As—the man who knows the Busso V6 so intimately that he could rebuild it with his eyes closed.
