BMW i8 Roadster

One of the most intresting cars BMW has given us in modern times is without a doubt the i8. The year is 2009 and the German auto gigant presents the BMW EfficientDynamics, a concept ment to show the future of the brand. When intruduced the concept feelt far from production, as BMW Vision cars often do. But the car was meet with much love from BMW enthusiasts and media alike. Could this really be the future of BMW?

What happend next is something that almost never happens and something that came out of the blue for everyone. In 2011 BMW came out with another concept, this time branded i8. The design clearly came from the 2009 concept but this time the car felt and looked more like a car that could really become a real thing. The production version of the i8 will however delay until 2014, long enough time for BMW to realese another concept on the same platform, the i8 Roadster concept was born in 2012. Both concepts promises a futuristic cockpit with doors that opens upwards and an exterior sculpted by the wind.

And when its finally thime in 2014, BMW does not disapoint. The production version looks like something out of Star Wars. Something that i carried over to the Roadster in 2019.

This example is hard to miss in inte Copper Frozen Metallic paintwork with accents in black and grey, agressive LED headlights and a top in grey/black. Unique for the i8 is the CFRP construction with body panels in plastic and a monocoque in pressed carbon. The unique exterior gives a clear indication of the brands future but with a hint of M1. With a press of a button the roof opens and the sleek coupe becomes a roadster. And in many ways this feels like the shape the car was always ment to have.

Just like the concept, the doors open upwards and presents a futuristic interior but also shows of the carbon construction as the door sills have been left bear. The cockpi, designed around the driver with a screen in front of you and a iDrive unit in the center.

The summer of 2020 marked the end of the i8 after just one generation and six years of production. 20,000 cars were built with just 3884 beeing Roadsters. A fantastic chapter of BMW history and likley something that we will never experiance again. A car with many firsts, built in pressed carbon, shaped by aerodynamics with a unique drivetrain and doors that goes the wrong way. Sold new in Sweden with just 4 users. Cease the oppertunity to own a slice of Bavarian history.
