Limited production. Aerodynamics in carbon fiber. Lightened interior without rear seat. Manual gearbox. What exactly are we describing? A new GT3? Well, not exactly...but kindof. The car in question is MINI's phenomenal GP. A limited model that has been available on all generations of the new MINI Cooper and acts as the last stop for those who want a MINI without compromise. But the story of the GP model is actually longer than that.
With motorsport in its DNA, the little Cooper has always been at least as successful in racing as it has been for the public. At the same time as half of Europe enjoyed the new small car in the middle of the last century, the car had enormous success both in rallying and also in racing. The small and potent car with its low weight and grateful chassis was well suited to these conditions and meant that the MINI was always a car you feared when it was on the start grid. Although visually it mostly looked like a Brit who got lost on the way home from the shop.
In 2006, when the whole world had learned to love the new MINI for a few years, the first GP model arrived. And although the base model had the same charm and personality as its predecessor, the "S" and "JCW" siblings showed that the new car indeed also had a justified place in racing and track driving. But as I said, the GP came. A limited edition car that was delivered without a rear seat and reduced weight along with a range of aerodynamic changes. Less weight and a more aggressive powertrain made the model a far more aggressive iteration than its siblings.
In 2013 it was time again. GP2 meets the light of day and it is exactly such a car that we have in front of us. One of 2000 cars made with the same recipe. Stiffer chassis, more aggressive drivetrain and reduced weight. And who really needs a back seat? The exterior wears a grey-blue color accented by details in red and black. the hood proudly marks its intake with a large GP decal and together with the decals over the side of the car make it easy to recognize a GP. A trademark for the GP1 was the four-spoke rims, which are also found here in black with a diamond-cut finish. At the rear, we find an extremely aggressive spoiler in carbon fiber and, below, an equally angry diffuser that frames the two exhaust pipes. The inside is completely black with details in red and feels very similar to a 'regular' JCW with the big difference that there is a little less of it.
This example is one of the few cars sold in Sweden that was delivered and has only two actual users. Continuously maintained and well maintained with a scant 7895kms from new, this is likely one of the finest GP2s Europe has to offer.
